The Allen County Historical Society was founded in February 1981 by local civic-minded residents, who recognized the importance of preserving the history of Allen County and its communities. Marie Gerald served as the first President. Current president is Judy Keown, a Charter Member of the Historical Society. Ms. Keown is assisted by an elected panel of officers, as well as a governing board, all made up of local community volunteer members.
In 1991, the former residence and medical office of Dr. Pellie Graves was purchased by the Allen County Historical Society. This Craftsman and Prairie style brick home, built in or shortly before 1909, was one of the first homes in Scottsville to have indoor running water. It is an honor to have been recognized since 2001 as a historical building on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, members and supporters are proud to continue the tradition of preserving Allen County’s heritage and history for future generations. Our Museum houses locally significant historical artifacts and memorabilia, which provide valuable insight into Allen County's history. Collections include written materials such as letters, diaries, pension applications, and church minutes, as well as genealogically significant resources including family history books and files, Allen County soldier files, obituary collections, a large Civil War collection, and much more. A microfilm reader is available to view images from the many reels of historic documentation, including wills, deeds, marriages, and other court records, along with microfilms of the Citizen-Times issues from 1911 through 2001.
